First, I read about Melville’s life and the history of whales and the environment in The Whale by Philip Hoare.
I am currently reading Moby Dick.
Next, I am reading (sadly, for the first time) some of Hawthorne’s work. Did you know Melville was good friends with Hawthorne and was quite fond of him. In fact, he influenced his writing of Moby Dick tremendously.
Hey Hawthorne, I could use some influence over here about my thesis.
